RMC Breaks New Student and Overall Enrollment Records
Randolph-Macon College will welcome 490 new students—its largest entering class ever with 440 freshmen and 50 transfer students—for fall 2019, with an overall historic enrollment of more than 1,510 students.
This is the first year that enrollment numbers have exceeded 1,500. Athletes returned to campus beginning August 12; freshmen will move in on August 29; and all other students will return on September 1. Classes begin on Monday, September 2.
During Orientation & Welcome Weekend (August 30 – September 1) the campus will buzz with activity as the newest hive of Yellow Jackets settle into their new home. RMC President Robert R. Lindgren will be on hand to greet new students on August 29 as they arrive at the Brock Sports & Recreation Center to check in.
Class of 2023
The Class of 2023 represents 18 states and eight foreign countries; 48 percent of the students are male and 52 percent are female. In addition, 20 percent are ethnically diverse. Many are Presidential Scholars, recipients of RMC’s signature scholarship that recognizes students who demonstrate the highest levels of academic achievement and leadership.
Legacy Students
Fifteen percent of all new students are Legacy freshmen—Yellow Jackets with family members who are either current students at RMC or who are alumni of the college. Family connections have long been an important part of the success of Randolph-Macon College. The Alumni Office, which supports the Legacy Program, will welcome Legacy Freshmen with special “goodie bags” when they arrive on campus.
The EDGE
During New Student Registration, which was held during the summer, incoming freshmen were introduced to the EDGE, RMC’s four-year career preparation program. With help from dedicated staff at the EDGE Career Center and RMC’s extraordinary faculty, students acquire a competitive advantage in reaching their career or graduate school goals. Some of the many resources provided to students include workshops, advising, internships and access to an engaged, global alumni network.
Four-Year Degree Guarantee
The Class of 2023 and their parents signed RMC’s Four-Year Degree Guarantee during registration sessions held during the summer. This agreement pledges that students who meet all necessary requirements will graduate within four calendar years, or RMC will waive tuition costs for RMC courses needed to complete the degree. Lindgren and other representatives from the college met with each student and family to discuss and jointly sign the Four-Year Degree Guarantee.
New and Noteworthy Programs
The college is proud to announce several exciting new programs and initiatives:
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program: integrates the college’s rigorous liberal arts education with a four-year nursing program that will prepare graduates for nursing careers. A state-of-the-art nursing facility, currently under construction, is slated for completion in 2020.
• eSports program: competitions are facilitated by electronic systems, particularly video games; the input of players and teams as well as the output of the eSports system are mediated by human-computer interfaces.
• Show Choir: this program uses vocals, choreography, staging, costuming and production to synthesize an artistic experience.
• Randolph Macon Ensemble: a musical organization dedicated to performing a broad spectrum of instrumental music, launched in spring 2019.
• Equestrian Program at Coventry Farm: includes a club, an Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) team, and an Eventing team. Riders board their horses and train at RMC’s Coventry Farm.
• Cybersecurity major: a computing-based discipline that involves the creation, operation, analysis, and testing of secure systems, networks, and applications to protect against a variety of digital threats.
• Writing major: the central focus of this major is to heighten students’ power to use the written word effectively and with style.
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Program
The Bachelor of Science in Nursing program prepares students to build extraordinary futures as nurses through a rigorous academic program. Students will learn in a state-of-the art facility (currently under construction) and experience some of the most advanced simulation technology in the Clinical Learning Center, with discipline-specific as well as interdisciplinary learning opportunities. With robust health assessment and skills labs in addition to simulation learning laboratories, students will experience an optimal learning environment designed to improve technical nursing skills, clinical judgment, decision making, communication and teamwork. The BSN program at RMC also offers students the opportunity to engage in undergraduate research, study abroad, and intercollegiate sports.
VCCS Articulation Agreement
Randolph-Macon College and Virginia Community College System (VCCS) schools have adopted a Guaranteed Admissions Agreement (GAA). The agreement provides graduates of VCCS schools with a seamless transition from their two-year associate degree program into RMC’s four-year baccalaureate program. To be guaranteed admission to RMC, GAA students must graduate from a transfer-oriented degree program at a Virginia community college with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and submit an official transcript showing completion of the associate degree.
