Most colleges have orientation leaders. RMC has New Student Captains—because we believe it’s about so much more than orientation!
New Student Captains

O captain, my captain!
Starting college is a major deal. New place. New people. New routines. That’s why we pair ALL new students with two Captains (or, peer mentors!) right from the start: a Transition Captain and an Advising Captain. Together, they’ll act as a built-in support system for your entire first year at Randolph-Macon.
Your Transition Captain will:
- Engage with incoming students throughout the summer, and assist with the onboarding process.
- Guide students in their crew through Registration Days, Orientation, and Welcome Week.
- Help students build connections across campus through intentional programming and activities.
- Host monthly social events.
- Serve as a semester-long, personal resource for all students in their crew.
- Meet with students as needed to provide individualized social transition support.
Your Advising Captain will:
- Work with an Academic Advisor to co-facilitate a first-year success strategies course.
- Support students in course selection, academic planning, and educational resource identification.
- Help students build effective study skills and time-management strategies.
- Host individual meetings, group sessions, and drop-in hours to offer academic guidance.
- Facilitate peer-led workshops and events related to academic skills and resource navigation.

Every Captain has a crew…
A crew is a group of new students with the same Transition Captain. Every new student is part of a crew that will have meetings, workshops, and social activities throughout the first year. Students meet their crew on move-in day!
…and THREE crews make a League!
Leagues are for fun and ensure opportunities for students to meet people outside of their crew – especially in those first few weeks at RMC.

- 1967 League
- Boydton League
- Ashland League
- Trackside League
- Fountain League
