An inauguration is much more than a formal ceremony marking the start of a presidency — it is a moment for the entire Yellow Jacket community to come together to honor our history, affirm our mission, and look toward the future we are building together.

Dr. Michael E. Hill is the 16th President of Randolph-Macon College. He began his tenure at RMC in August 2025 with a clear embrace of our liberal arts tradition and history and a bold vision for the future. Dr. Hill’s previous roles, including most recently as President of the Chautauqua Institution, reflect a career spent helping organizations and individuals unlock potential.

Inauguration Schedule

The investiture of President Hill will be a highlight of several days in which all Yellow Jacket are invited to celebrate scholarship, history, and the distinctive value of the Randolph-Macon experience as a community.

TUESDAY, April 21

12 p.m. | Planting the 16th Inaugural Commemorative Tree

Dr. Hill will welcome Ashland Mayor Steve Trivette and officials from the Town of Ashland to plant a tree in honor of Randolph-Macon’s 16th Presidential Inauguration. Tree planting is an annual April tradition celebrating our shared commitment to the environment in our community.

Explore visual displays of our students’ scholarship from across the academic disciplines. Throughout the two-hour symposium period, listen in to a series of moderated conversations and performances from faculty, students, and staff that illustrate the learning in Randolph-Macon’s classrooms and beyond.

5 – 6 p.m. | Ira Andrews Lecture: Dr. Eboo Patel, Founder and President of Interfaith America

A noted leader in interfaith dialogue and pluralism, Dr. Eboo Patel will give the Ira Andrews Lecture. The Ira Andrews Lecture is an endowed series that brings highly respected ministers or religious experts, without restriction as to denominational affiliation, to speak to the Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church congregation, Randolph-Macon students, and the community on topics that interested Andrews, such as the intersection of faith and society. Patel will be the first speaker in the series outside of the Christian faith.

6 – 8 p.m. | Inaugural Welcome Celebration

An evening to celebrate the inauguration of Dr. Michael E. Hill for special guests and members of Randolph-Macon’s esteemed Presidents Society and Heritage Society.
