Sept. 19: “Men in Place: An Evening with Miriam Abelson”
Miriam Abelson, associate professor of women, gender, and sexuality studies at Portland State University, will give a lecture at Randolph-Macon College on September 19, 2019 at 7 p.m. in the Dollar Tree Room, Brock Commons (304 Henry St.). This event is free and open to the public. Map and Directions
Abelson’s research interests focus on masculinities, transgender studies, LGBT youth, urban and rural studies, and intersectional approaches to race, sexuality, and gender. She has published articles and book chapters on masculinities and violence, trans feminism, intersectionality and gendered fear, childcare subsidy policy, and language and inequality in social psychology.
Her book, Men in Place: Trans Masculinity, Race, and Sexuality in America, demonstrates through a large and geographically diverse interview study with transgender men that contemporary U.S. masculinity is deeply embedded in the spaces and places men move in their everyday lives and is inseparable from race and sexuality.
This event is sponsored by the Randolph-Macon College Honors Program, Department of Sociology, Anthropology, & Criminology, Department of Psychology, and the Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies Program.
