Phi Beta Kappa Welcomes New Inductees

Randolph-Macon College’s Zeta Chapter of the Phi Beta Kappa (PBK) Society honored 34 new members from the Class of 2022, and inducted Alan Rashkind ’69 as an honorary member, during a celebratory dinner on May 20. The Commencement weekend event marked the 99th anniversary of the establishment of a PBK chapter at Randolph-Macon College.
Since its founding in 1776, Phi Beta Kappa has celebrated excellence in the liberal arts and sciences and championed freedom of thought as America’s most prestigious academic honor society. Each chapter can elect no more than 10% of its graduating class, and RMC is among just 10% of U.S. colleges and universities to house a PBK chapter.
President Lindgren reminded the new inductees to commemorate their achievements during their time at Randolph-Macon, but to also remember all those who helped them along the way—and to pay that support forward.
“Your Phi Beta Kappa recognition reflects your superb academic performance along with a strong strength of character that you possess—and an acknowledgement of the bountiful talents and skills that you have worked hard to earn and acquire … as well as those that you have been given,” President Lindgren said. “So now it is time to pay it forward, in a way that honors all those who have enriched your life. You are champions at this College, and I expect you to help lead us into the future collaboratively using the many important skill sets you have acquired along your RMC journey.”

One distinguished alumni was also inducted as an honorary PBK member: Alan Rashkind ’69. At RMC, Rashkind excelled academically and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. He was elected to Pi Gamma Mu, Omicron Delta Kappa, and Pi Delta Epsilon, and was also captain of the debate team and president of Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity and the Council of Fraternity Presidents. An accomplished attorney who served on RMC’s Board of Trustees for 29 years, including 10 years as chair, Rashkind has been active on numerous board and College committees, including the Society of Alumni Board and his 25th and 50th Class Reunion Committees. Last year, Rashkind received an honorary Doctor of Law Degree from Randolph-Macon College.
