Honors Banquet Celebrates Exceptional RMC Students

The Randolph-Macon College annual Honors Banquet was held April 12, 2018 in Birdsong Hall. The event celebrated the Honors program and the exceptional students it serves. Twenty faculty and twenty student members attended the event.

Since its inception in 1982, the Honors program has provided outstanding students with a unique mix of academic and social opportunities. Spanish Professor Mark Malin, who directs the program, says the banquet is an opportunity to not only celebrate the graduating seniors who had finished the requirements to graduate with honors, but to also acknowledge program highlights and the accomplishments of all Honors students.

“As director of the program, I always enjoy the annual banquet,” says Malin. “This year, two students from the Student Honors Association planned the banquet and served as masters of ceremony. They did a great job, and I thank Kate Girtain ’20 and Avery Crowder ’20 for their work. My favorite part of the banquet is to recognize those students who have persevered and who have finished all the requirements to graduate with honors. Congratulations to those fine students!”

After senior Honors students were recognized for having finished the program, Malin was presented with this year’s Art Conway Enthusiasm for Teaching and Learning Award. Prior to that, last year’s winner of the award, Communication Studies Professor Sara Trask, gave a motivational presentation about the road that led her to academia and to Randolph-Macon College.

The Honors Program at R-MC
The Honors program at Randolph-Macon College was created to enhance the academic and community experience of RMC’s most outstanding students. Innovative, interdisciplinary classes offer Honors students the chance to explore compelling topics not found in the standard curriculum. Working closely with faculty and with other Honors students, these courses involve unique projects and co-curricular activities, offering students the chance to explore their topic outside of the classroom.

The Honors program forges closely knit learning communities and enduring friendships among students, offering living/learning spaces, co-curricular events and activities, and extracurricular social events.
