Writing a successful resume can set you apart and showcase your unique abilities. While a resume is not required for general admission to Randolph-Macon College, applicants to the Nursing Program are required to submit a resume as part of the application process.
Nursing Resume
What is a resume?
A resume is a formal document that highlights an individual’s professional and academic qualifications and is commonly used when applying to colleges, jobs, or internships. Never written a resume before? No problem! We have helpful tips, tricks, and resources below to help you begin writing your resume.
Components of a Successful Resume
Academic & Professional Objective
An objective is an optional section that can help set the tone for the rest of your resume. In 1-2 sentences, a successful objective allows you to summarize and outline your personal, professional, and academic goals, as it relates to the opportunity you are applying for.
Education
The education section of your resume allows you to showcase your academic credentials – both inside and outside of the classroom. While, of course, you will want to list the high school(s) you have attended and your anticipated graduation date, you may also want to add other academic credentials that show what makes you unique as a student. This can include a strong GPA, academic societies you are a member of, relevant coursework and research, or other professional clubs and organizations.
Experience
We want to learn about your unique interests and experiences! In your experience section, you can highlight any extracurricular activities that you devote your time to. This can include part-time employment, sports, community service, or leadership activities.
Awards and Achievements
Have you been recognized by your school or community for your work and talents? Don’t miss your chance to tell us about it! Use this optional section as a place to briefly list any special awards or recognition you have received as a result of your academics, service, athletics, or other involvements.
Skills
If you believe the other resume sections do not properly capture all of the skills you can bring to the classroom or workplace, you can add a section to list them. Relevant skills can include anything from technical skills, such as computer software experience, to soft skills, such as great teamwork ability or problem-solving experience. Including your skills can help us to evaluate your abilities and qualifications for RMC Nursing in a holistic way.
Resume Tips Keep these tips in mind when you begin to write your resume.
Use Action Verbs
Use of action verbs in your resume can portray you as a doer, rather than a spectator, and convey your experiences in a meaningful way.
Quality Over Quantity
Colleges and employers want to see candidates with well-rounded experiences, but also with demonstrated commitment and time-management skills.
Keep it Brief
For most high school students, one page should be enough to convey the necessary sections, skills, and experiences.
Proofread
It is important to avoid spelling or grammatical errors in your resume. Ask for help if you need it!
