Course Registration FAQs
Some of our most frequently asked questions about registering for fall semester courses!
How many courses will I register for?
The Office of Advising Resources used your Yellow Jacket Orientation and Pre-Advising form to pre-select two courses. These courses will reflect your interest, anticipated major, and/or fulfill pillars within the RMC Curriculum. You will review those courses during your registration session and select additional courses totaling at least 12 credit hours.
Do I need to come prepared with a list?
No course list is necessary. You also do not need to be an expert on the RMC Curriculum or the majors/minors you are considering! Instead, take some time to review the RMC Curriculum and the requirements of the majors/minors you are considering. You can find major/minors and program requirements in the Academic Catalog (please use the side navigation in the Academic Catalog to see each program).
What is the foreign language requirement at RMC? Do I take a placement test?
All students will complete two courses in one foreign language. RMC does not use placement tests. Instead, if a student would like to continue in the same language they took in high school, the Department of Modern Languages has already reviewed their application file to determine the best placement. Your placement will be available to you during registration.
Students with college credit for a modern language (that have not yet completed the foreign language requirement) will continue with the next course in the sequence.
I am registered for YJSS 101. What is that?
Yellow Jacket Success Strategies 101 is a one-hour per week first year course. Satisfactory completion of YJSS 101 is required as part of the Four-Year Degree Guarantee. Through regular meetings with their academic advisor and a captain, the course provides students with the resources they need to get involved on campus, gain independence in transacting academic business, explore special academic and co-curricular programs, and learn what it takes to be successful at Randolph-Macon, both inside and outside the classroom. All first-years have been enrolled in a section of this course. The course is 1 credit hour and is graded S/U.
When do I need to decide my major?
You will declare your major by the end of your second year. If you are not sure about what you want to major in, it’s okay! Your first year is for experimenting and discovering who you are and where your interests lie. Take classes in areas of interest during your first year. This can assist you in discovering which direction you want to continue as you move into your second year.
Will my AP/IB/Dual Enrollment credits already be accounted for?
It depends! The Registrar’s Office is only able to account for credits earned through AP/IB if there are official scores on record. At the time of registration, some students might not have all of their scores. That’s okay! Students should share a list of AP/IB tests they’ve completed (and feel they’ve done well) during their one-on-one advising appointment.
The same is true for Dual Enrollment (DE) coursework. Transfer credit can only be applied if the college that awarded the credit has sent an official transcript. Be sure to have your college transcripts sent to RMC.
And don’t worry – if credit arrives after you register and impacts your fall schedule, we will notify you.
