Our professional staff has an obligation to both assist students seeking tutoring support and to ensure our tutors are working in a safe and comfortable environment.

In instances where tutors might experience discomfort in a session, our policy is as follows:

  • Higgins Academic Center Directors will meet with the tutor directly to discuss options.
  • We will discuss new strategies and implement those strategies to see if the situation can be improved.
  • We will meet with the tutee in question to discuss concerns and give the tutee additional opportunities for improvement (with the tutor’s consent).
  • Explore support from a different tutor (if available).
  • Communicate to the student that tutoring will no longer be available (with this policy cited) and encourage the studetn to work with the faculty during their office hours or to seek support opportunities outside of the College.

In all cases, however, it is our policy to confirm the tutor’s right not to hold sessions with a student who makes them feel uncomfortable/unsafe. It is also not possible to hire a new tutor solely for a student with whom our other tutors no longer feel comfortable working.
