Family Weekend Schedule

friday, October 6

  • 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. – Mad Hatter’s Lunch, Estes Dining HallEnjoy a Mad Hatter themed lunch in Estes, with flavors of each chapter of the iconic book, Alice in Wonderland. $11 for members of the family.
  • 3 p.m. – 4 p.m. – Open HousesMeet campus staff to learn more about how your student can connect with opportunities on campus.
  • 5 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. – Family Weekend Welcome Reception – President’s Home – Join President and Mrs. Robert R. Lindgren for the Family Weekend Reception. Reservation requested.
  • 6 p.m. – 7 p.m. – Tea Party at the Fountain, sponsored by the Student Engagement Center – – Brown Fountain Plaza – Get ready for a whimsical experience filled with delicious snacks, lively music, a wide array of fun hats, and balloon art. Draw a fun chalk art message or picture in honor of this day designated to celebrate the uniqueness of every Yellow Jacket. Join us for an hour of merriment and fun! Families are encouraged to bring their children and students to the celebration. Come dressed in your most outlandish hat to receive a prize! This event promises to be an unforgettable time and be sure to stick around for the First Friday Outdoor Movie.
  • 7 p.m. – 8 p.m. – Musical Performance and Dessert – Featuring Randolph-Macon Symphony Orchestra, with special guests, the VCU Health Orchestra & Wind Ensemble and post ensemble dessert reception – Center for the Performing Arts – Blackwell Auditorium – Performance lead by Dr. Brian Coffill, D.M.A., Music Director. Free, no tickets required. Reservation requested.
  • 8 p.m. – 1 a.m.First Friday Outdoor Movie, sponsored by Common Activities Board – Brown Fountain Plaza – Join the Commons Activities Board as they transform the Fountain Plaza into a cinema under the stars. Bring your family, friends, and a cozy blanket for a magical evening. The Commons Activities Board will provide free meal tickets for our food truck vendor, Boka Taco, to the first students to come to the event. All others are invited to purchase indulgent meals from Boka Taco. Feel free to bring your own picnic and snacks as well. Don’t miss out on the fun and laughter that awaits you at our First Friday Outdoor Moving Event!

  • 9 a.m. – 10 a.m. – Coffee and Pastries at Jacket Java Warm up with some complimentary coffee and a bite to eat before heading over to the Campus Store to get your RMC swag. (A perfect chance to view the various displays featured throughout the Commons, including SURF, Study Abroad, and Interfaith!)
  • Local Event: Ashland Farmer’s Market – 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. – Ashland Town Hall, 121 Thompson Street, Ashland, Va. 23005
  • 10 a.m. – Ring Ceremony – Blackwell Auditorium – Participating students are presented with Randolph-Macon class rings. These custom-made rings are an enduring symbol of collegiate pride and commemorate the meaningful moments in a student’s academic life.
  • 1 p.m. – RMC Football v. Averett – Day Field – Game tickets are $10 per person, Free for students and youth under the age of 12.  Tickets may be pre-purchased. Fall Tail Gating Information
  • 3 p.m. – 5 p.m. Fall Fest – Brown Fountain Plaza – Bring your friends and family to the Fountain for an afternoon filled with your favorite fall activities and treats, including lawn games, crafts, and more! This free event is open to people of all ages.
  • 4:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.Show Choir Gathering – Blackwell Auditorium, Center for Performing Arts
  • 10:00 p.m. – Late Night Brock
  • Local Event: Ashland Haunted History Tours – All tours begin at 108 Robinson Street in downtown Ashland. Tickets recommended in advance.
  • Local Event: Ashland Theatre Featuring first run and classic films and live music, the historic Ashland Theatre features unique art deco details paired with state-of-the-art technology.

  • 9 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. – Sunday Brunch, brought to you by Parkhurst – Estes Dining Hall – Enjoy fresh, made-from-scratch food and flavors that are handcrafted and personally designed by our chefs with your needs in mind. Our recipes come to life every day in our kitchens using the best ingredients, prepared in the freshest ways possible.
  • 11 a.m. – Family Weekend Worship Service – Duncan Memorial United Methodist, 201 Henry Street, Ashland, Va. 23005
  • Local Event: Ashland Museum – 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. – 105 Hanover Avenue, Ashland, Va. 23005 (804) 368-7314
  • 3 p.m.Randolph-Macon Wind Ensemble, with special guests, the Patrick Henry High School Wind Ensemble – Center for the Performing Arts – Blackwell Auditorium – Performance lead by Dr. Brian Coffill, D.M.A., Music Director. Free, no tickets required.

FAQs about Family Weekend

Parents arrive as their work obligations and other commitments permit. The more popular events are generally scheduled for late-afternoon on Friday into Saturday. No check-in is required!

Guest parking passes are not required for Family Weekend. Parents may park in all student and faculty/staff lots. 

Guests are welcome, and we encourage you to bring siblings. (Book a campus tour while you are here!)

Pets are allowed on campus and must be leashed at all times.  However, we ask that you refrain from taking them inside buildings, as others may be allergic.  Clean-up is the sole responsibility of the pet’s owner.

We encourage casual, comfortable dress for the weekend.
