Why Summer Is a Great Time to Apply
The title of this blog says it all. With fewer distractions and more flexibility, summer break is the perfect time to make progress on those college applications. While it might not be the most conventional summer activity, it’s something your future self will thank you for. This, plus all the other benefits listed on this page!
MORE TIME, LESS STRESS
Even if you’re a die-hard procrastinator, there is something to be said about working under a little less pressure. In fact, we think taking some extra time to perfect your college applications will always be the right move. Because with the chaos of senior year, it’s not uncommon to see students rush through their writing samples, or forget to submit an important document before the deadline. Getting a head start this summer will remove that risk, and offer the confidence that comes with knowing you’ve given it 100%.
HEAR BACK FIRST
When it comes to RMC, being among the first to submit an application means you’ll be among the first to hear back from us. All of our summer applicants will receive their admission decisions (& merit award notifications!) in September. Not only does this alleviate some of the stress that comes with waiting, but knowing this early will also give you access to our special admitted student programming that happens in the fall.
A CHANCE TO STAND OUT
Yes, something as simple as submitting your application this summer can help you stand out in a large applicant pool. That’s because it demonstrates real interest, initiative, and follow-through—all desirable qualities that can help paint a fuller picture of who you are and the kind of student you’ll be. Think of it as a subtle (but super effective) way to show college recruiters that you’ve got just what they’re looking for.
TIME TO PERFECT YOUR WRITING
A break from assignments, events, and extracurricular activities is sure to free up some headspace for a little self-reflection—an essential component of a well-developed college essay. Not to suggest that you couldn’t write something great during the school year, but that extra time will help you dig a little deeper. After all, this is your chance to tell these schools more about who you are, and what you’ll bring to their communities. A stand-out essay requires a lot of work, so give yourself time to do it right instead of just getting it done.
A HEAD START ON COLLEGE PLANNING
Might sound obvious, but knowing earlier means you can get a head start on planning for the future. The sooner you hear back, the sooner you can start comparing your options. While there’s no pressure to make a decision before the deadline (that’s May 1 for most non-binding application plans), starting earlier will give you more time to ask questions, re-visit campuses, compare aid offers, and marinate on this big decision.
GET IN ON COLLEGE VISITS
No, you don’t have to be an applicant to take advantage of those special campus visits and events offered throughout the summer. But, having an application under your belt is sure to make those experiences feel a little more personal and purposeful. And once things seem more real, you’ll ask better questions, notice new details, and have a much easier time envisioning the kind of life you’d lead at that particular college.
So if you’re feeling inspired to get a head start, we’re all for it. The RMC application is open, and summer is a great time to check it off your list. Submit your application now, and send us your transcript after you’re back in school—there’s no reason to hold off on taking this important next step toward your college future!
