Summer Courses Move to Online and Asynchronous for 2025
Registration is open for summer courses at Randolph-Macon College, which will be offered in an online and asynchronous format for the first time. This flexibility is designed to help students balance internships, jobs, and other summer plans. Summer courses, offered during two concentrated terms in June and July, are a great opportunity to explore new subjects, fill credit needs, or complete prerequisites.
The shift to online and asynchronous courses is a strategic recommendation from the College’s ongoing strategic planning process, with a goal of optimizing the summer experience for both students and faculty. RMC’s summer nursing courses will remain in-person.
“Nearly all of this summer’s offerings will be online and asynchronous courses, a shift we’ve been moving toward for the past few summers,” said RMC Provost Alisa Rosenthal. “Offering the courses in this format makes them much more accessible to a broader range of students, many of whose internship and work schedules make in-person or synchronous classes impossible.”
This shift makes it possible for the College to grow the summer program, as well as explore digital modalities for course delivery. Summer terms at Randolph-Macon are open to current RMC students (including incoming first-year students) in addition to students enrolled at other colleges or universities. High school graduates not yet enrolled in college are also welcome to apply.
What’s more, as part of the summer shift, the College is investing in a commitment to ensure that RMC faculty can deliver digital courses of the highest quality. This spring, the faculty teaching summer term will participate in Quality Matters training to align their courses with the most effective practices for online teaching.
“Each will also work with another RMC faculty member to review and revise their course design before summer term,” Rosenthal continued. “We’re committed to making sure that the summer online experience lives up to the standards of our academic year courses.”
“The rapid increase in the tools and techniques for online education over the past decade has been immense. The College’s intentional commitment to providing both up-to-date training in effective online pedagogies through Quality Matters and opportunities for peer consultation are tremendous supports for both faculty experienced in teaching online and those venturing into it for the first time,” said Bart Natoli, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Classics. Natoli is also serving as the Coordinator of Online Instruction and Peer Reviewer this summer.
“I know my teaching has greatly benefited from the College’s support; so, I’m excited to see what the future of online education holds at Randolph Macon.”
The summer terms offer a wide variety of courses. Some fill general education requirements, like Understanding Music, which teaches the central concepts of Western music theory. The summer can also provide an opportunity to get a leg up on major requirements. The first two courses needed for a psychology major, Introduction to Psychology and Research Methods in Psychology, are offered in June and July, respectively. Students can also dive deeper into interesting topics, like BIOL 151, which explores topics related to Biological Diversity.
The June term runs from Monday, June 2 through Thursday, June 26 with final exams on Friday, June 27.
The July term runs from Monday, July 7 through Thursday, July 31 with final exams on Friday, August 1.
Currently enrolled RMC students in good standing may register for June or July term classes via MyMaconWeb until the add/drop deadlines.
Students not currently enrolled at RMC must complete the Non-Degree Seeking Application to register for summer courses. Admission to RMC’s summer terms does not constitute admission to the College’s degree program. However, credit from all courses successfully completed during summer terms may be applied towards a Randolph-Macon College degree should you later be admitted to the College’s degree program.
