RMC Welcomes New and Returning Board of Trustees Members
Randolph-Macon College President Robert R. Lindgren and Board of Trustees Chair Sue Schick ’84 are pleased to announce three new members of the College’s Board of Trustees.
Ed Spence ’76 is a newly elected trustee, while Allison O’Brien ’77 rejoins the board and has been re-elected for additional terms. Dexter Hurt ’94, the President of the Society of Alumni, also joins as an ex officio member. All three members will be sworn in at the Oct. 26 Board of Trustees meeting.

J. Edward Spence ‘76
Spence graduated from Randolph-Macon with a bachelor’s in biology before earning his medical degree from the University of Virginia in 1981. Additionally, he received residency training at the University of North Carolina and medical genetics fellowship training at Baylor College of Medicine.
Throughout his career, Spence has provided care to both children and adults in the specialty of medical genetics, which includes the diagnosis and management of individuals with birth defects, chromosome disorders, learning disorders with a genetic basis, skeletal dysplasias, and metabolic disorders.
For 27 years, he served as a faculty physician and medical educator at Carolinas Medical Center and Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte, N.C., holding several leadership positions. From 2017-2023, he was a Professor of Pediatric Genetics and Metabolism in the Department of Pediatrics at UNC’s School of Medicine in Chapel Hill, N.C. Although he retired from his full-time position, he still has a weekly half-day clinic.
In 2012, he received the Academic Service Award from the North Carolina Pediatric Society, the highest award in the state for an academic physician.

Allison M. O’Brien ‘77
O’Brien graduated from Randolph-Macon with a bachelor’s in psychology with a minor in German. She recently retired as Vice President for Business Development with Long & Foster Corporate Real Estate Services, where she specialized in corporate relocation.
A dedicated alumna of the College, O’Brien previously served on the Board of Trustees from 2009-2021 in addition to stints on the Board of the Society of Alumni, the Board of Associates, the Yellow Jacket Club Board, the RMC Athletics Hall of Fame selection committee, and the Macon Connections steering committee.
O’Brien devotes much of her time to community engagement, serving as a volunteer for Little Hands of Virginia and a regular blood donor for the American Red Cross.

Dexter C. Hurt ‘94
Hurt graduated from Randolph-Macon with a bachelor’s in computer science. While at RMC, he was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, a national leadership honor society, and was a four-year starter and two-year captain on RMC’s football team.
Hurt currently serves as the Director of Information Systems and Technology at the Greater Richmond Transit Company, playing an instrumental role in driving the evolution of Richmond’s public transportation network with the introduction of the Pulse rapid transit line.
From 2015-2023, Hurt was a board member for the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation for Virginia State Parks, appointed by Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe. Additionally, he serves on the Deacons Board at Quioccasin Baptist Church in Richmond, volunteers with various community organizations, and coaches youth sports.
