Randolph-Macon College and Christopher Newport University have signed a memorandum of understanding for guaranteed admission to CNU’s Master of Environmental Science program for select RMC graduates.

This agreement reflects CNU’s desire to recruit biology and environmental studies students who exhibit high academic achievement and a strong desire to become environmental scientists, the unique character of RMC graduates, and the long history of association between the two institutions.

“Randolph-Macon produces excellent undergraduate scientists who go on to top graduate programs,” Environmental Studies Professor and Program Director Dr. Charles Gowan commented. “We’re proud to have a formal agreement with CNU that allows our students to move more seamlessly into their graduate careers. Our graduates who have gone to CNU report that mentors there provide the same kind of impactful, hands-on guidance that they received at RMC. The two programs are a great match.”

When possible, RMC shall nominate one exceptional RMC Bachelor of Science in Biology student or Bachelor of Arts in Biology or Environmental Studies student each year from either the junior (for early admission) or senior class as a candidate for guaranteed acceptance into Christopher Newport’s MS-ENVS program. Nominated students must have a GPA of 3.0 or greater, use the standard CNU application process, and meet admission standards of the MS-ENVS program, including satisfying the program’s prerequisites.

The MS-ENVS program application fee will be waived for all RMC students, regardless of whether or not they are part of the guaranteed admission program, and RMC students will not be required to submit a GRE score with their application. RMC students admitted to the MS-ENVS program will be considered for funding through either Graduate Assistantships (GAs), Graduate Laboratory Assistantships (GLAs) or through Research Assistantships (RAs).

“This partnership reflects a shared commitment between Christopher Newport and Randolph-Macon to prepare the next generation of environmental scientists,” said Dr. Matt Lattanzio, Graduate Program Director of MS-ENVS. “We are excited to welcome outstanding RMC students into the MS-ENVS program and support their continued growth through advanced study, individualized mentorship, and professionally focused training, preparing them to address environmental challenges and enter the workforce with strong scientific and practical expertise.”
