Randolph-Macon College’s Bachelor’s program in Engineering has been accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, the global accreditor of college and university programs in applied and natural science, computing, engineering, and engineering technology.

ABET accreditation assures that programs meet standards to produce graduates ready to enter critical technical fields that are leading the way in innovation and emerging technologies, and anticipating the welfare and safety needs of the public.

“ABET accreditation has been the gold standard in Engineering programs that we sought when we first developed the major and added it to our curriculum in 2019,” noted Randolph-Macon College President Robert R. Lindgren. “The program’s smooth path to accreditation is a testament to the visionary work of our Department of Physics, Engineering, and Astrophysics faculty in building and shepherding the program. This major is highly sought after by applicants. And the early successes of our recent graduates make clear that it is both a game changer for our College and for our students.”

“We are so proud of how our Engineering major prepares students for the workforce in these important fields and honored to have the critical ABET seal of approval,” added Head of Engineering Programs Dr. James McLeskey. “We distinguished our program with hands-on learning opportunities like internships, personal attention from faculty, paid research opportunities, and a reputation for developing good communication skills, ethics, and the ability to live and work as global citizens. With ABET accreditation, I see bright days ahead for RMC Engineering.”

Sought worldwide, ABET’s voluntary peer-review process is highly respected because it adds critical value to academic programs in the technical disciplines, where quality, precision, and safety are of the utmost importance.

Developed by technical professionals from ABET’s member societies, ABET criteria focus on what students experience and learn. ABET accreditation reviews look at program curricula, faculty, facilities, and institutional support and are conducted by teams of highly skilled professionals from industry, academia, and government with expertise in the ABET disciplines.

ABET is a nonprofit, non-governmental organization with ISO 9001:2015 certification. It currently accredits 4,564 programs at 895 colleges and universities in 40 countries and areas.

ABET accreditation enhances our graduate’s employment opportunities, supports their paths to licensure, registration and certification, and helps expand their career options internationally. Though common in large research universities, ABET-accredited Engineering programs are less common at liberal arts colleges, which further adds distinction to the College.
