Retiring Faculty Member Honored with Bruce M. Unger Award
Each spring, Randolph-Macon College honors the contributions of retiring faculty with more than 10 years of service to the College with the Bruce M. Unger Award presented at Commencement.
Dr. Bruce M. Unger was a political science professor at Randolph-Macon College for 40 years. Unger planned to retire in 2008 but lost his courageous fight against cancer before his retirement was official.

During the 2025 Commencement ceremony, Randolph-Macon will honor Associate Professor of Theatre Gregg A. Hilmar, who is set to retire at the end of the 2024-2025 academic year.
Gregg A. Hillmar, Associate Professor of Theatre, joined the Randolph-Macon faculty in 2002. He earned his B.A. from the University of Richmond and his M.F.A. from the University of Texas at Austin. As the head of the Theatre program, Hillmar has taught a wide range of courses at RMC, including scenic, lighting, and sound design, stagecraft, theatre history, and theatre appreciation. He has also overseen the design and construction of sets and lighting for more than 100 RMC theatre productions in his RMC career, mentoring students through each step of the process. Hillmar is the author of Light Plot Deconstructed, a best-selling manual about using the Vectorworks software package in theatrical practice. His scenic and lighting design work has been in theaters and exhibitions from off-Broadway to Las Vegas, winning dozens of “best design” awards.
