Randolph-Macon College will present “Female Learning Communities in Seventeenth-Century Britain” on October 17, 2018 at 6 p.m. in the Dollar Tree Room, Brock Commons (304 Henry St.). This Women’s Studies Lecture Series event is free and open to the public. Map and Directions
During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, English Catholic and Puritan gentlewomen were criticized for being too vocal or too educated. English society increasingly valued educated women, but men disapproved of women using their education and voices to argue for positions that men opposed.
In this lecture, Susan Cogan, history professor at Utah State University, will explore the power in women’s speech and ideas, and how educated viewpoints led to accusations of “unladylike behavior” for some early modern women.
This event is sponsored by the Committee on Assemblies and Special Events (CASE).
