News Story categories: Academics Student Life

Time management is a crucial skill for academic success. With classes, assignments, and extracurricular activities, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. These strategies will help you stay on top of your schedule and make the most of your time.

1. Keep a Schedule of Time

Maintain a schedule of all the tasks you need to complete.  Utilizing a calendar, an agenda or a calendar app on your phone will help you keep track of all tasks and assignments.  White boards and sticky notes are helpful for short-term tasks.

2. Account for ALL Activities

Whether you choose an agenda or utilize a calendar app on your phone, be sure to include EVERYTHING.  If you are in a sport, club or organization, be sure to include your practice schedule, any meetings and any study hall hours you are responsible for.

3. Prioritize

Refer to your agenda/ calendar to create to-do lists for each day or each week.  Map out which exams and assignments are happening that week and on which day.  This will help you prioritize where to spend your time.

*** Having every assignment in your agenda/ calendar will help when you map out your weekly plan

4. Avoid Procrastination

Procrastination will lead to stress, anxiety and poor grades.  It is easy to fall behind if you are not continuously prompted.  Avoid doing activities that you have not already allotted time for.  You can say, “yes” to fun and free time once you complete your assignments first.

5. Use Time Wisely

Most people are more alert in the mornings and afternoons.  Use this time for your more complicated tasks.  Try not to wait for the evening hours to complete your tasks, as most people’s bodies begin to slow down during that time.  Try to maximize the time in between classes and before dinner to get the majority of your work done.

6. Stay Organized

Keep a clean and organized work space.  Our space is a direct reflection of how we feel.  When you keep a clean and organized work space, this will allow you to dedicate all your focus on the tasks at hand with minimal distractions.
