Advocating for Increased Financial Aid for Virginia Students
In partnership with the Council of Independent Colleges in Virginia (CICV), Randolph-Macon College is advocating to support increased funding for the Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant (TAG) program, which makes college more accessible for Virginia residents attending private colleges and universities.
TAG’s Impact on Virginia Students
Currently, TAG provides $5,125 annually to eligible students, with an increase to $5,250 planned for 2025. These grants help Virginia families offset the cost of private higher education, making college more affordable for many. To further this mission, CICV and RMC are advocating for an increase to $6,000 per year in the upcoming state budget cycle, and inviting our community to join the conversation.
TAG has helped nearly 300,000 Virginians afford college since its inception more than 50 years ago, yet funding for the program represents less than 4% of Virginia’s higher education budget. Meanwhile, private colleges like Randolph-Macon award one-third of all bachelor’s degrees in the Commonwealth.
Proposed Changes for 2024
The advocacy effort seeks not only to increase the grant amount but also to expand eligibility to fully support full-time online students. This initiative acknowledges the growing demand for flexible learning options while ensuring equitable support for all students pursuing higher education.
Governor Glenn Youngkin will introduce the proposed budget for the 2024-2026 fiscal years later this year, which will include recommendations for TAG funding. The final decisions will have a significant impact on students across Virginia.
How You Can Support TAG
Randolph-Macon College encourages students, families, alumni, and faculty to join the advocacy campaign in support of increased Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant (TAG) funding. Personal outreach to state leaders is essential in showcasing the program’s importance to Virginia families and the Commonwealth’s workforce. Writing to state legislators and Governor Glenn Youngkin allows individuals to share their gratitude and personal stories about the impact of TAG on their educational journeys.
