Performance and Discussion with Raven Custalow

March 13 @ 6:00 pm 7:30 pm EDT

Raven Custalow, dressed in a Native American costume, holding an apple, captivates the audience with her mesmerizing performance.

Raven Custalow, of Mattaponi and Rappahannock ancestry and an enrolled member of the Mattaponi tribe, will discuss her art and activism and perform ceremonial dances.

Through her non-profit organization, Eastern Woodlands Revitalization, Custalow preserves and promotes ancestral cultural practices. A practicing Registered Nurse, Custalow advocates for health care for underrepresented Native populations and for women’s political participation in tribal affairs. Her feather mantle entitled Puttawus, a commissioned work, is in the collection of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

The event is in honor of Women’s History Month and co-sponsored through CASE, Art History, Nursing, and Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies.
