Living and Working Beyond Borders: Insights from Expats, Educators, and Diplomats

Join the Office of International Education for an engaging panel discussion-moderated by Dr. Lauren Bell, Associate Provost and Dean of Academic Affairs-featuring RMC alumni and faculty as they share their experiences living and working internationally.

Drawing from careers in education, diplomacy, and global professional environments, our panelists will reflect on the opportunities, challenges, and personal growth that come with crossing borders —both literally and culturally.


Jeff Freeman ’90 built an international career spanning Central Europe, Amsterdam, Brussels, and Washington, DC, working in journalism, trade development, and consulting for the European Commission. He holds an MA from Johns Hopkins SAIS and speaks five languages.

Erin Doss served 16 years in the Foreign Service, advancing U.S. policy across Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. Now at Randolph-Macon College, she teaches political science and remains committed to civic engagement and community service.

Eric L. Smith ’06 earned a B.A. in Political Science with a History minor and was active in theater and student organizations. After early roles in politics and government contracting, he joined the Foreign Service, serving overseas and in Washington, DC.

Annie Merritt ’17) majored in International Studies with a Spanish minor while serving as an International Assistant during RMC. After graduation, she spent four years teaching in Spain through NALCAP and now works for CMA CGM in international shipping.
