Land, Liberty, and Loyalties: Indigenous Participation in the American Revolution (Lecture)

Join us for an evening lecture by Ashley Spivey and Katie Gibson addressing the roles of Tidewater Virginia Native peoples during the American Revolution and the effects of the revolution for Virginia Indigenous peoples. Dr. Spivey (Pamunkey) is a historical anthropologist specializing in the archaeology and culture of Powhatan Algonquian communities in Tidewater Virginia. Her academic and professional work centers on supporting Tribal sovereignty through cultural and natural resource management and historic preservation, especially through her position as Executive Director of Kenah Consulting. Ms. Gibson is a public historian with extensive experience in research, genealogy, and federal acknowledgment. Her previous work includes serving as Archive and Collections Specialist with the Mattaponi Indian Tribe and Reservation on their petition for federal acknowledgment. She is a Research Associate at Kenah Consulting.
