Bring your talents to rmc

Calling all Virginia Community College instrumentalists! If you played in your high school band or orchestra, this is your chance to continue making music—for college credit! We invite you to join the Randolph-Macon College Wind Ensemble, Jazz Improvisation Laboratory, and/or Symphony Orchestra.

Our large instrumental ensembles, under the direction of Dr. Brian Coffill, are open to all VCCS musicians in all degree programs—not just music majors!

What to Know

Interested students must commit to attending bi-weekly rehearsals at Randolph-Macon, schedules listed below. In addition, students must commit to performing in (usually two) ensemble concerts each semester.

MUSC 214: WIND ENSEMBLE

Mondays & Wednesdays, 1:10 p.m. to 2:40 p.m.

Wind Ensemble is the campus musical home for all woodwind, brass, and percussion musicians. RMC Wind Ensemble performs both classic and cutting-edge band literature from across the instrumental spectrum, frequently performing both on and off campus. Open to all majors, no audition is required.

MUSC 216: Jazz Improvisation Laboratory

Tuesdays & Thursdays, 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The Jazz Improvisation Laboratory is a hands-on, collaborative musical exploration of jazz and its improvisatory elements, with both instrumentalists and vocalists joining in ever-evolving combinations.
No previous jazz or improvisation experience required.

MUSC 217: SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Mondays & Wednesdays; 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Symphony Orchestra is made up of RMC’s string musicians with select winds and percussion. RMC Symphony Orchestra performs orchestral literature that spans music history and pushes modern boundaries. Like the Wind Ensemble, this group frequently performs both on and off campus. Open to all majors, no audition is required.

Program Cost

All participants will receive the Macon Music Award—a scholarship that totals $4,400. This brings the cost of ensemble participation and earned Randolph-Macon course credit to $250 per student.

The Symphony Orchestra rehearsed in the Haun Rehearsal Hall for their upcoming performance.
