Testing and Certification Requirements

To be eligible for the Teacher Preparation Program (TPP), all education students must demonstrate proficiency in mathematics and submit a passing test score on the Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment (VCLA).

Mathematics Proficiency

Please visit the Making Math Magic Site to find out more about the Praxis Core Math Assessment. This site offers content review, test-taking tips, and practice tests.

To demonstrate proficiency, applicants must submit passing test scores on one of the following:

PRAXIS Core Math – Academic Skills for Educators

OR SAT

OR ACT

OR Grade of B- or better in a MATH course that satisfies the Quantitative and Scientific Reasoning Pillar

OR Grade of B- or better in MATH 123

Virginia Communication & Literacy Assessment (VCLA):

NOTE: The GRE is not an acceptable test for entry.

Additional Testing Required For licensure

Each endorsement area requires additional assessment. Pelase consult the endorsement area requirements for details.

Certifications Required for Licensure

Applicants for VDOE Student Teaching must have successfully completed ALL of the following:

Emergency First Aid, CPR and AED Certification or training

NOTE: RMC’s PHED 105 – First Aid/CPR/AED meets the VDOE requirement.

Dyslexia Awareness Training

Child Abuse and Neglect Recognition and Intervention Training

Behavior Intervention and Support Training

Cultural Competency Training
