Minimum Requirements for Admission to Teacher Preparation Program
- Submit a complete application by April 1st, sophomore year
- 2.8 cumulative GPA; major and minor GPAs will also be reviewed to ensure the student is making progress toward the 2.8 minimums required to student teach.
- Completion of or sufficient progress towards at least EDUC 220 with a C- or better
- One of the following:
- Pass Praxis Core Math Assessment
- Qualifying SAT/ACT score
- Earn at least a B- in a MATH course that satisfies the QS pillar
- Earn a B- in MATH 123
- Pass VCLA
- Positive evaluation from the Education Department
- Positive evaluation from faculty member outside of the department
- Records and results from any RMC academic integrity or judicial violation
- Dispositions Self-Assessment
- Recent RMC Lesson Plan
- Field Evaluation from fieldwork
Applicants must be accepted in order to be eligible to apply to Student Teach. In the event that an applicant is not accepted in a spring application cycle, they may reapply during a summer/fall application cycle. Only students who have previously applied in the spring are eligible for reapplication.
Late and incomplete applications will not be accepted. Ineligibility for the program due to incomplete or late applications is not appealable.

Minimum Requirements for Admission to Student Teach
- Submit a complete application by September 15th, senior year
- Must have been accepted to the Teacher Preparation Program
- 2.8 cumulative, major and minor GPA
- Completion of all required education courses and affiliated coursework with a C- or better
- Findings/results of a required background check
- Records from any RMC academic integrity or judicial violation
- Positive evaluation from the Education Department
- TB Test Results
- First Aid, CPR and AED Certification
- SVEA Membership documentation
- VDOE Dyslexia Awareness Training Certificate
- VODE Behavior Intervention Support Training Certificate
- VDOE Certification of Child Abuse and Neglect Training
- VDOE Cultural Competency Training
- Dispositions Self-Assessment
- Recent RMC Lesson Plan
- Field Evaluation from fieldwork

Minimum Requirements for Licensure
At the culmination of your student teaching experience, you will meet with the Chair of the Education Department to complete an Initial Virginia Teaching License. You will be provided with a complete list of required materials during your student teaching semester.
Students must have passing scores on all required assessments for licensure prior to the licensure application meeting.

Application Review Process
All applications will be reviewed by the Teacher Preparation Committee. Students will receive a decision letter from the Education Department Chair and TPC chair within three weeks of submission.
ALL students should apply to the TPP as sophomores.
Students who are not admitted may reapply in their junior year. Reapplications will be accepted in the summer/fall application cycle for students who were previously considered in a spring application cycle.
Program and Standardized Assessments Timeline
Sophomore Year
Fall Semester
Begin taking education courses and declare your education minor at the registrar’s office. Begin academic planning.
Take VCLA (Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment).
Demonstrate math proficiency by completing one of the following:
- Pass Praxis Core Math Assessment.
- Submit qualifying SAT or ACT scores for exemption
- Earn a B- or better in a MATH QS course
- Earn a B- or better in MATH 123
Spring Semester
Apply to the Teacher Preparation Program
Senior Year
Fall Semester
Apply to Student Teach
Take Praxis Teaching Reading: Elementary Assessment (5205) (only elementary and special education candidates)
Take Praxis Subject Assessment (except for Latin and special education candidates)
Spring Semester
Entire semester is devoted to Student Teaching.
You cannot enroll in additional coursework.
