Applied music courses are one-on-one music lessons for academic credit. The hour-long lessons are taught weekly over the course of a semester and at a time mutually agreeable to the student and the instructor. Applied music courses carry one semester hour of academic credit and require students to pay a course fee of $75.

The Music Program offers applied music courses in voice, piano, organ, flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, horn, trumpet, low brass, percussion, violin, viola, cello, bass, guitar, conducting, and composition. Each student enrolled in an applied music course must:

  • complete fourteen (14) one-hour lessons over the course of the semester
  • attend two (2) Music Forums and perform on one of those forums
  • perform on the final studio recital

Applied music courses are only offered in the fall and spring semesters, and the number of openings in the courses is limited due to budgetary and space constraints. For that reason, all applied music courses are listed as “Permission Only” and require students to receive authorization from the Music Faculty to enroll in the course.

Students seeking to take applied music courses should indicate their specific interest during pre-registration through MyMaconWeb by going to Student Forms and filling out the online form. The form will ask for the student to identify the course they are interested in and their major/minor.

The Music Faculty will authorize the MMW requests based on the following priorities:

  • Top priority
    • Students who are Music Majors: Choral Pedagogy Emphasis, Instrumental Pedagogy Emphasis, and Performance and Literature Emphasis
  • Second priority
    • Students who are Music Minors and Arts Management Majors with Music Emphasis
  • Third priority
    • All other students, ordered by time received

Notice of authorization will be communicated through MMW, and the student will be enrolled in the applied music course by the Registrar’s Office.

When the courses are full, the Music Faculty will maintain a waitlist of interested students using the above categories. If an opening occurs during the registration period, the next eligible student will be notified through MMW of authorization and subsequently enrolled in the requested course.

Note that top priority for applied music authorization is given to students who are Music Majors and Music Minors, for whom applied music is a required part of their degree. In some semesters, all openings in applied music may be occupied by Music Majors and Minors.
