The Classics Department offers a variety of scholarships and awards to Classics majors and minors who perform at the highest academic level.


Robert Epes-Jones Scholarship in Classics

The Robert Epes Jones Scholarship in Classics was established in 1987 by Lucille Cox Jones to honor her husband who taught at Classics at R-MC from 1950-1975. The Robert Epes-Jones Scholarship is award to one or more incoming freshmen who plan to major in Classics at Randolph-Macon College. Students are selected by the Classics Department based on their high school record and interest in classical studies and/or Latin. To be eligible, a student must also be the recipient of a Presidential Scholarship; the Epes-Jones Scholarship award will be in addition to the Presidential Scholarship award.

 


H. Burnell Pannill & Mary Alleta Pannill Scholarship in Classics

The H. Burnell Pannill and Mary Alleta Pannill Scholarship in Classics was established in 2015 to be awarded annually to a rising senior who demonstrates an exceptional interest in and aptitude for the study of Classics. The distinction of this Scholarship will be determined by the response of each annual recipient who accepts the challenge, inherent in the award, to add individual prestige and honor to the Scholarship and who will acknowledge this dedication: Honor the Past, Celebrate the Present, Anticipate the Future.

 


Joseph Boyd Haley Prize

The Joseph Boyd Haley Prize is in honor of the long time teacher of Greek and goes to the outstanding student in Elementary Greek. This award is accompanied by a handsome certificate and a book chosen to reflect the interests of the recipient.

Edwin W. Bowen Prize in Advanced Latin

The Edwin W. Bowen Prizes in Advanced Latin is given in honor of Dr. Bowen who taught Latin for 45 years. This award is given to the most outstanding student in advanced Latin. This award is accompanied by a handsome certificate and a book chosen to reflect the interests of the recipient.

Walton Prize for Greek Scholarship

The Walton Prize for Greek Scholarship is one of the oldest prizes at R-MC, having been established in 1872 by George E. M. Walton. This award is given to the most outstanding student in advanced Greek. This award is accompanied by a handsome certificate and a book chosen to reflect the interests of the recipient.
