The Big Event- Residents

The Big Event is on November 4, 2018

The Big Event has become a fall tradition of selfless service at Randolph-Macon as hundreds of students come together for one day to say, “Thank you,” through service for the support from the Ashland Community.  

The Big Event gives students a way to give back to the community and show appreciation to ALL non-student residents and organizations in Ashland by completing volunteer projects FREE of charge. Examples of previous projects include general yard work, painting, mulching, washing windows, cleaning, and minor repairs of general residences, churches, and other community locations. If needed, tools can be provided by The Big Event.

Requesting a Job 

You can request a job by calling the Office of Student Life at 804-752-3205 or by filling out the Job Request Form at

Important Dates: 

Last day to submit Job Request Form: October 26, 2018
Last day to cancel projects: November 1, 2018 


  • The Big Event is a one day service project, lasting no more than 4 hours
  • The students are volunteers and not professionals  
  • The Big Event provides the means for R-MC students to say "Thank you" to everyone in our community
  • The use of power tools and ladders are prohibited 


Frequently Asked Questions 

What is a job site check?

  • You will be contacted by member of the Big Event Committee who will schedule a mutual time to meet at the job's site for the site check
  • It lets the Big Event Committee confirm that the project is feasible and safe to do within four hours
  • Makes sure that an accurate number of volunteers and tools are assigned to the project
  • It allows for a committee member to answer any questions that you may have, in person.

If I request a project, is there a guarantee that it will be completed?

While we aim to complete 100% of the projects that are requested, we cannot guarantee that your project will be completed. Many factors are taken into consideration: number of volunteers, supplies needed, project feasibility.  The job site check will allow for us to determine these variables. 

What time should I expect the volunteers to show up on November 4?

Between 12:45 PM and 1:30 PM. Depending on how far away your project is from campus, and if the volunteers need to go to tool distribution will depending on the time volunteers will arrive at the project site. Check-in will run from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM

Do I need to be home while the volunteers are working?

Yes. The resident must be home when the volunteers arrive and for the full time that the project is being completed. If you are not home, we cannot complete the project.

How long will the volunteers be at my project site?

The volunteers can be there until 5:00 PM, no later.  

What kind of tools can volunteers use?

Volunteers will bring the tools you request during your job site check and they can use your tools. However; under no circumstances can volunteers use power tools or ladders. This includes but is not limited to: lawn mowers, weed whackers, drills, leaf blowers, etc.  If you have questions please ask during your job site check or email us at 

When is the last time that I can cancel my project?

If you need to cancel your project for any reason, we ask that you let us know by November 1, at 5:00PM.

Can the volunteers paint?

Yes.  The Big Event Committee may be able to provide some supplies. However, you must provide the paint.  

Is there a rain date for the event?

Unfortunately, if there is bad weather, a decision will be made at the discretion of The Big Event Executive Committee.  In the event of bad weather, The Big Event will be cancelled and not be made up.

How do I confirm that my job will be completed on November 4?
