FYEC 143 - 144 - Africa! One Continent-Many Visions, Many Voices - Americans know little about Africa. Worse, they may hold a distorted view, influenced by cultural myths and stereotypes. This FYC offers a substantial introduction to the continent. Interleaved as the FYC progresses through the year will be explorations of Africa's history from the earliest times to the present and examinations of works by the continent's major modern writers. Central in the year-long course will be the clashes that define Africa's story-among indigenous people, between colonizers and these people, among political factions, between urban and rural ways, among religions, and between genders. Africa will emerge as complex, culturally rich, and very human. Professor Alphine Jefferson, Department of History, and Professor Ted Sheckels, Department of English. Four hours each semester. [Area of Knowledge requirements met: one history course under the Civilizations area and one literature course under the Arts and Literature area. Open to all students.]
