The Pathway to Excellence Program, made possible by a grant from the Virginia Foundation of Independent Colleges, is a peer coaching program in which trained upper-class students and staff provide a supportive network of social connections, campus resources, and programs for incoming first year minority and international students. The Pathway to Excellence Program is designed to create a nurturing environment that encourages and prepares participating students to attain their academic goals. The program provides the opportunity for guidance, friendship, a sense of community, and a comforting environment away from home. The goal of the program is to assist minority and international students during their transition from high school to college. In addition, the Pathway to Excellence Program will assist students with the common challenges associated with the first year college experience. Coaches will build bridges between their peers and the various departments across campus. They will also serve as a ready resource for questions ranging from how to get involved in student life to how to add a class or declare a major.

There are many engaging campus events that coaches and peers attend together throughout the first semester as well as events specific to Pathway to Excellence Program participants.
The program will include workshops, conferences, trips, service opportunities, and many other campus activities on campus designed build community and camaraderie amongst participants in the Pathway to Excellence program. All of these events are free of charge to Pathway to Excellence program participants.
