The Gender Relations Council
The Gender Relations Council is a diverse collection of Randolph-Macon students (both male and female) who have a desire and interest in gender-related topics and building positive relationships between men and women. The council advises and assists the Gender Resource Center in planning events, activities and goals that support the cause of cross-gender understanding and supporting female students, faculty and staff on campus. The Gender Relations Council is open to all Randolph-Macon Students. Women of Color Discussion Group
The Women of Color (WOC) Discussion Group meets weekly to gain support and form connections with women on campus that are similar to themselves through discussion of various topics that are relevant to Women of Color on the campus of Randolph-Macon College and the world at large. It is also an opportunity make new friends and look for resources and basic information on personal, academic and social issues that impact the WOC group members’ lives on and off campus. The weekly group discussions vary in topic and format, and center on discussion and opinion rather than serving as an academic or counseling setting. Each year, the WOC discussion group’s experience culminates in an annual retreat. This retreat is an, overnight event for individuals who have either participated regularly in the group, or have a strong interest in the groups activities but was unable to attend throughout the year.
The retreat involves various group activities, discussions, and multimedia presentations regarding various topics that are important to women of color on college campuses. The retreat is often described as a “slumber party” type of atmosphere, and is an opportunity to further build “sisterhood” amongst women of color, while simultaneously providing a space to relax off campus.
Women of color group events are open to all women who identify as women of color on campus, including:
- African-American/Black Women
- Asian/ Asian-American/ Pacific Islander Women
- Hispanic/ Latina/ Chicana Women
- Native American Women
- Women of Multi-ethinic/Multi-racial backgrounds
- Women from Countries other than the U.S.
Women's Athelete's Outreach (WAO)
Women's Athelete's Outreach is a student organization dedicated to encouraging female atheletes to use their positive influence for the promotion of high self-esteem, community involvement and the prevention of high-risk behavior in young women. WAO also encourages support of female atheletes and and women involved in sports.
WAO sponsors various R-MC and community events throughout the year, to include an annual Girl Scout's field day for local troops, movie and discussion nights on topics of concern to women atheletes, organizing support for various athletic events and support of organizations like the Gender Relations Council and Macon Peer Response on programs related to gender concerns.
Macon Peer Response (MPR)
Macon Peer Response (MPR) is a student led peer education group that advocates around the issues of sexual assault and relationship violence on campus. MPR consists of a diverse group of students that provide a variety of educational and awareness services to a variety of constituencies on campus, and they also provide supportive services to students who want to report sexual assault, and provide companion services to students who are seeking services in response to sexual assault or relationship violence.
Among many other efforts, Macon Peer Response sponsors annual events for National Domestic/Dating Violence Awareness Month (in October) and National Sexual Assault Awareness Month (in April), as well as the annual R-MC Clothesline Project and Take Back the Night March.
One in Four
One in Four is a male-oriented sexual-assault peer education group that seeks to educate male undergraduates about rape. The mission of one in four is to be the ones who inform men on campus about how to help the one in four women on college campuses who survive a rape or attempted rape.
One in four regularly presents "The Men's Program" a nationally recognized workshop in which participants learn about what a rape feels like and how to help a woman recover from a rape experience. One in Four members also frequently partner with other campus offices and organizations to do healthy relationship and healthy dating programming across the campus.
