| Richard Beale Davis (1907-1981), native Virginian and alumnus of Randolph-Macon College, class of 1927, had a distinguished career as Professor of American Literature at The University of Tennessee.
His 4,000 volume collection focuses on the intellectual life of the colonial South, the subject of his seminal work, Intellectual Life in the Colonial South, 1585-1763, winner of the National Book Award for 1978.
