Networking From Your Room
Most students find it desirable to have a computer in their dorm room and there is a network connection for each pillow. The College does not prescribe what kind of computer students should have, but greatest compatibility with current and future computing at R-MC favors a pc with Microsoft Windows 98SE or 2000 operating system.
An R-MC network connection provides the student with the ability to have:
- full email access on campus and to the rest of the world via the Internet.
- access the World Wide Web (providing the student's computer is capable of running a browser)
- by way of the World-Wide Web, students can access the Library's online catalog system and search many other subscription-only databases.
- as available, students can also use their computers to access course infomation (syllabi, assignments, class discussion groups, etc) via WWW.
If you don't own a computer....
You can access email and the internet along with numerous campus supported software packages in our computing laboratories . R-MC strongly recommends that if you choose to purchase a computer that it is a Windows system with an ethernet card, ethernet cable, a good quality printer and a multiple-year warranty. See section on Recommended Minimum Configurations.
If you own a computer without an ethernet card....
You can purchase an ethernet/network (10/100 mbps) card from your computer vendor or another outside source. Please Note: when you purchase a computer from any manufacturer and you include a network connection, please let them know that the computer will be connected to an ethernet based data network.
If you own a computer with an ethernet card installed....
There is a "Get Connected" team of students available in the dorms during the moving-in period. These students will assist in the network software configuration only of your pc. In addition, students may call the ITS Helpline at x8500 for assistance.
