What type of writing can I bring to the Writing Center?
In the Writing Center, we work with academic and non-academic writing, course writing assignments (formal and informal), scholarship/travel abroad essays, and graduate school application essays.
We also work with writers at every stage of the writing process. This means that sometimes students simply bring notes or ideas, and sometimes they bring their 4th draft of a ten-page essay that they've been working on for a month. Peer tutors are trained to help at every stage.
What else should I bring to the WC?
If you are working on a writing assignment for a course, bring your assignment sheet, notes, and writing. If you are working on non-academic writing, such as a scholarship/study abroad essay or an op-ed piece for a news source, bring any related materials (such as an essay prompt, the article you are responding to, etc.). In addition, we suggest that you come to the Writing Center with specific questions in mind so that we can focus on your most pressing concerns.
Your session will be more productive if your peer tutors have access to these materials.
How long is a session with a WC Peer Tutor?
Each session is scheduled for 45 minutes. You may not need this entire time, but you are limited to it. Please plan ahead and be prepared to tell your peer consultant what your specific concerns are.
Do I need an appointment or can I just drop in?
You can either schedule an appointment ahead of time or you can just drop in. However, your scheduled appointment is guaranteed, you can choose your tutor, and you will have priority over “drop-ins.” If you drop in, you may not be able to see a peer consultant. So we recommend scheduling an appointment.
