STUDY/HOW TO STUDY : SQ3R METHOD
Another useful method for reading textbooks or journal articles is the SURVEY, QUESTION, READ, REVIEW & RECITE (SQ3R) METHOD. Here’s how it works:
SURVEY-Before you read, scan the titles, headings, pictures, graphs and chapter summary to get an overview of the reading. |
QUESTION- Ask yourself questions as you read, i.e. “What was that paragraph about?” or “What is the main idea of this section?” |
READ- Read for comprehension, locate important facts and concepts,record/summarize information in the margins, etc. |
REVIEW-Practice and rehearse (aloud or in you head) the main ideas, reflect on terms, anticipate exam questions. |
RECITE-Transfer information to your long term memory |
Where to Read?
Choosing a place to read may be very important. If you are a person who needs total quiet to concentrate, you will need to identify a location with no noise or interruptions. If you prefer music in the background, you can carry your music and handset with you. Following are some places on campus that students have recommended for reading:
McGraw Page Library (2nd floor) |
HAC Tutoring Room |
Vacant Classrooms |
Outside under a tree |
Beside the fountain |
Other quiet locations |
Places that may not be conductive to uninterrupted reading include:
Your Room ( constant interruptions, videos, TV, phone, AIM) |
In bed (reading soon turns into a long nap) |
In Estes or the Brown campus center (to many distractions and people coming through) |
