Individuals with Disabilities: Recent studies have shown that about 1 in 5 Americans have some kind of disability and 1 in 10 have a severe disability. About 9 million people of all ages have disabilities so severe that they require personal assistance to carry out everyday activities. In 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act was enacted to help increase the employment rate of people with disabilities by making is illegal to practice discrimination against individuals who have a disability.
The Americans with Disabilities Act gives civil rights protections to individuals with disabilities similar to those provided to individuals on the basis of race, color, sex, national origin, age, and religion. It guarantees equal opportunity for individuals with disabilities in public accommodations, employment, transportation, State and local government services, and telecommunications.
