The following provisions apply mostly to those students who entered Randolph-Macon under the old curriculum, that is, prior to September 2005.
- Students who enter the degree program of Randolph-Macon College before September 2005 must fulfill the requirements of the catalog under which they matriculated with the exceptions detailed below.
- All questions arising from the transition between the old and new curricula shall be resolved by the Committee on Admissions, Credits, and Academic Status of Students.
- Students matriculating Fall 2005 or thereafter will be subject to the FYE policy on Failure, Withdrawal, and Transfer.
The Collegiate Writing Requirement In the past, students fulfilled the collegiate writing requirement by taking English 111-112 or English 123. Under the new curriculum, these courses will disappear. Returning students who have not fulfilled the writing requirement should enroll in English 180, Strategies of Argument and Exposition., a four-credit course, which will substitute for the old sequence. Under no circumstances should returning students be enrolled in English 185. This course can only be taken in conjunction with FYE courses.
The Collegiate Literature Requirement In the past, departments designated certain combinations of courses to fulfill the literature requirement. During the transitional period students under the old curriculum may fulfill the requirement by selecting any two designated courses from AMST, English, FLET and the foreign language literature courses. This requirement may be fulfilled by completing any of the following courses: ENGL 200 level literature courses; Foreign Literature in Translation (FLET) courses, AMST 350, 351, 356, 357, and 358; AMST/COMM 310; COMM 381 (J'08 only); DRAM 320; ENGL/FILM 381 (SS '07 only) and any foreign language literature course.
The Collegiate Social Science Requirement - UPDATED OCTOBER 2007 In the past, to fulfill the social science requirement students were required to take two approved courses within a single discipline. During the transitional period students under the old curriculum may fulfill the requirement by selecting any two designated courses from the approved list of social science courses.
The Collegiate History Requirement Beginning September 2006, the Collegiate Requirement of History 111-112 will be replaced by the AOK General Education requirement of History 100-101. Students under the old curriculum may take HIST 111-112 or HIST 100-101.
Currently enrolled students who have NOT taken History 111 or 112 may enroll in either History 111-112 or History 100-101 BUT, once they begin a sequence, they must complete that sequence; and, History 100-101 must be taken in that order.
Students entering the College in September 2005 MUST take History 100-101 to satisfy the AOK requirement for graduation.
The Collegiate Laboratory Science Requirement In the past, to successfully complete science laboratory course requirement students needed science lab courses in two different categories, broadly classified as “physical science,” “life science,” or “interdisciplinary science.” During the transition period the requirement can be met with any two courses which are currently designated as partially satisfying the requirement.
