Philosophy
Inquiry lies at the heart of the study of philosophy, a discipline that seeks to understand our world by asking questions, challenging certainty, and encouraging critical, independent thought.
The examined life: From the long history of Western philosophy to contemporary issues such as bio-medical ethics or the purpose of education, the philosophy curriculum introduces students to a diverse range of philosophical perspectives while considering fundamental questions about what it means to be human.
From philosophy to practice: Philosophy majors take part in an internship or directed field study, as well as a capstone project, benefiting from both in-depth study and practical application of their knowledge.
Beyond R-MC: Where will you find a philosophy major? Recent graduates are pursuing careers in advertising, finance, non-profit, education, retail sales and information analysis.

| "The Presidential Scholarship is just more evidence of the commitment that R-MC has to ensuring education to all students who seek it."
Greg Moffitt '12, who double majored in philosophy and political science, was the recipient of scholarships from the National Federation of the Blind of Virginia as well as the Lions Club. He was also a recipient of R-MC’s Presidential Scholarship. Additionally, Moffitt was an associate member of Ruritan National, a civic service organization made up of local clubs in urban areas, small towns and rural communities. In fall 2011 he volunteered at a fundraiser that his local chapter held in King George County, Virginia. On campus, he served in 2008 as president of the R-MC chapter of the College Republicans, and in 2011 he was a member of the college's Pre-Law Society. He is also a talented musician who plays music for his hometown church and has performed in concerts at various venues, including Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church.
