Music is often called the "universal language," a common bond shared across centuries and cultures. The diverse curriculum of the music program at Randolph-Macon College engages students in the rich breadth and depth of music through courses in performance, theory, history, and technology.
Music in depth: The music curriculum includes not only key foundation courses but also courses in music education, recording techniques and the music industry, along with topics such as the role of music in film and politics.
Music careers: Students interested in the Music Major can follow three slightly different
paths: Music Major, Music Education, or Arts Management with a Music Emphasis. For details on these programs consult the Course Catalog. Our graduates have gone on to careers in a variety of areas including music education, music therapy, music management, church music, and music retail. Others have gone on to graduate school in music, as well as in other fields.
Music performance: Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, Ujima Gospel Choir, our partnership with the Hanover County Band, Pep Band and more—the music program encourages participation in R-MC's performing musical groups. Music major Susanna Carson '12, who plays the organ at a local church, also traveled with R-MC’s choir to Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy and France. “It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," she says, "singing in so many beautiful cathedrals with the choir."

| "I made it through my freshman year and prospered."
Brandon Alwan '11, an Atco, New Jersey native, was a music major with minors in psychology and religious studies. "I started off with a biology major in mind, but music consumed my heart and I switched majors at the end of my freshman year." In addition, Alwan played football and participated in Brothers 4 Change, the Ujima Gospel Choir for which he acted as president, and was involved with the Black Cultural Society,an organization that strives to raise awareness about social issues. In his future academic pursuits, Alwan wants to tap into both sides of his brain by combining music and science. "I'd like to study music therapy in graduate school," he says. |
