International Studies
As an international studies major, you'll develop a deeper understanding of the interrelationships between cultural, political, economic and social systems—essential knowledge for building a successful future in our increasingly interconnected global community.
Major choice: The international studies major is an interdisciplinary program; you'll begin with a group of core courses then choose a concentration either in Culture & Society, with an emphasis in one global region, or International Relations with an emphasis either in political science or economics/business.
Internships and study abroad: All international studies majors complete a travel abroad or study abroad experience. Maggie Smith '10 completed an internship in the conservation department of the Norwegian Folk Museum in Oslo, Norway. Katie Monaco and Susan Frantz, both class of '08, spent a summer attending classes at the University of Marburg in Germany, in a program with students from 21 different countries.
Careers: Whether at home or abroad, graduates of R-MC's international studies program can be found in many different fields, including law, finance, education and business. Coleman Adams '04 is an assistant commonwealth's attorney for the state of Virginia. Brendan Toone '06 is an investment advistor at MetLife. Jennifer Sabine '94 is the managing director of the Paris, France division of the International Institute for Learning, and notes, "I am doing what I hoped to do when I majored in French and International Studies—to be a bridge between cultures."

| "The campus was so lovely."
Vi Mai '12, born and raised in Vietnam, arrived at Randolph-Macon in 2008. Here, Mai chose to pursue an international studies major with minors in economics and political science. She was also active on campus, including maintaining the position of secretary for R-MC’s International Interests Group (IIG), a group whose goal is to promote global awareness about international issues. In addition, as an International Assistant (IA) Mai was able to help make the transition to RMC easier for other foreign students. Mai was also a member of R-MC’s Franklin Debating Society, a speaking consultant and economics/political science tutor at the Higgins Academic Center (HAC), and a participant of Macon a Difference Day, an annual event held in conjunction with Earth Day and designed to spruce up the community.
