Spanish
The language, culture, history and rich literary traditions of Spain and Latin America are the focus of the Spanish major at R-MC, leading not only to proficiency in spoken Spanish but also to a deep appreciation for the unique and varied Spanish-speaking communities of the world.
Comprehensive major:
From introductory language courses to advanced literary studies, the Spanish program offers you a comprehensive curriculum. Students interested in teaching Spanish may also pursue coursework for an education endorsement. The major concludes with a capstone project, developed in conjunction with the student's last 400-level course and culminating in a presentation of their work during R-MC's annual Research Day.
Cultural enrichment:
Students can get involved with the activities of the Spanish Club as well as participate in a variety of activities on campus and off campus in Ashland and the Richmond area, including but not limited to Latin dance, live theatre in Spanish, and visits to area restaurants offering foods from various cultures of the Spanish speaking world. On campus Spanish cultura y conversación come to the R-MC community through Spanish film nights and through Tertulia, the Spanish conversation and social group.
Study abroad:
For majors and minors as well as non-majors alike, study abroad lets you enjoy the challenges and excitement of immersing yourself in everyday life in a new culture. Spanish major Corinne Campbell '11 spent a junior-year semester in Valparaiso, Chile. Then she brought her expertise home to volunteer working with Hispanic kindergartners in a local elementary school. Liz Collier, an English major, blogged about her J-term 2011 service-learning trip to Guatemala. Students can benefit from study abroad experiences that span from our January term travel courses to a full semester and even a full academic year. Recent Faculty-led J-term study abroad opportunities have included trips to: Spain (Cáceres, Alicante), Costa Rica and Peru.
Careers and more:
Proficiency in a second language opens the door to unanticipated opportunities. Sarah Witte '09 has recently earned her master's degree at the University of Virginia. Marci Varley '03, whose experiences have included an undergraduate study abroad and internship in Germany and post-graduate volunteering in Uganda, now is a Senior Program Associate with the State Department's International Visitor Leadership Program. Linsey Hackett '07 was a Peace Corps Volunteer following graduation and now is a bilingual education teacher in the New York City public school system through the Peace Corps Fellows Program at Teachers College, Columbia University.
