When we last left the women of the Randolph-Macon lacrosse team, they had just suffered a tough loss at the hands of #3 Salisbury University. Looking to bounce back, the Jackets traveled to Owings Mills, Maryland to play the host the Mustangs of Villa Julie College.
Playing in front of a crowd of close to 100, the Jackets fought a hard game throughout, ultimately ending in defeat at the score of 10-9. Coming back from a 6-2 halftime deficit, the Jackets outscored the Mustangs 7-4 in the second half, but came up just one goal short as time expired. Freshman Erin Clare Cassidy, totaling four points on the day, proved she would be a prominent force for the Jackets and netted her first collegiate career hat trick, along with senior teammate Lacy Phelps. Sophomores Morgan Hutchinson and Emily Kent each added a goal, while freshman Stephanie Serena added one as well. Assists for the Jackets were tallied by Cassidy, and sophomores Kelly Cramer and Laura Fox. In the net, senior Lindsay Shalbert recorded nine saves.
Coming off the tough loss, the Jackets hosted #14 in the country Cortland State University on March 8th. The women played a hard game in the gusty conditions and gave the nationally ranked team a fit. Seniors Alex Wright and Marie Parry each added a pair of goals, while Phelps, and freshman Elyse Cooper each tallied one. Cassidy totaled two assists, while Phelps picked up one as well. Despite horrific officials, the women fought hard and showed the SUNY team they could hang with the best. The Jackets spurred a late rally which was abruptly halted when a referee called back an evident goal by Cramer. Despite the loss, Shalbert totaled six saves.
This past Saturday, the women traveled to Washington D.C. to play against the Cardinals of the Catholic University of America. This proved to be a tough day for the Jackets as they fell victim to a 20-12 defeat in the hands of the Cards. Goals for the Jackets were scored by Phelps and Wright each with three, Hutchinson and Cooper with two a piece, Cassidy, and senior Amanda Rzucidlo each netting one. Schalbert recorded 13 saves, while freshman goalie Alex Flammia recorded two.
The Jackets will be back in action on March 14 as they travel to Roanoke, Virginia to play the Maroons under the lights at 7:00 PM. Best of luck Jackets!
