A Value-Driven Approach

Being Greek means more than being part of a lifelong brotherhood or sisterhood. It means living every day by the values instilled in us by our chapters and by our Greek system: values such as the importance of scholarship, service, leadership, and integrity. As Greeks, we recognize that as students of Randolph-Macon College, we are students first. The pursuit of knowledge represents the pinnacle of our priorities, and as such, Greeks are devoted to reaching their full academic potential. We also recognize that learning extends beyond the classroom doors, and so devote ourselves to serving the needs of others and the community at large. The success of the Richmond Heart Walk, in which over 60 members of our Greek community actively participated, stands as a great example of this commitment. We Greeks recognize that regardless of whether our time and efforts affect the life of one or the lives of one-thousand, we are capable of making positive change in the lives of those around us. Among the most prominent places in which Greek service can be seen is our own campus community. Being a leader means a lot of things: serving as a role-model to others, recognizing one’s responsibility to create positive change and taking the initiative to create that change, among other things. Randolph-Macon Greeks can be spotted in leadership positions from Dance Marathon to the Campus Activities Board to the Student Government Association.
For all these reasons, I am very excited to announce a new initiative being undertaken by the Randolph-Macon Inter-Fraternity Council, Panhellenic Council, and the Office of Student Organizations and Greek Life: values-based education. Values-based education is a system in which we will work to develop the core of our members, helping them to become aware of those principles that we most highly regard. The values taught by the Greek system and its respective chapters offer each of their members a compass. This compass offers direction in facing every decision that a Greek faces in his or her life. I believe that by helping to instill Greek values in our new members, we will help mold a strong generation of leadership within the Greek system.
