One of the best things any team can have going into the postseason is momentum. After beating Hampden-Sydney 72-66 in front of 1,400 people, the Men’s Basketball team had exactly that.
Unfortunately, college sports are never predictable. In a huge upset, the Yellow Jackets were beaten by Hampden-Sydney in the quarterfinal round of the ODAC tournament. The Jackets had the lead the entire game, until the last 5 seconds when HSC tipped in an errant jumper to take the lead.
The 20-6 record that this loss dropped the Jackets to is still very impressive, and makes their 5th 20-win season since 2001. Though the Jackets did not win the ODAC this year, they played great as a team and had an exciting season.
On an individual level, the Jackets made a lot of noise in the ODAC, and brought home a First-Team all ODAC honor, a Second-Team all ODAC honor, and a Rookie of the Year award.
Chesterfield, Virginia native Justin Short was named to the First-Team all ODAC squad, averaging 15.8 ppg tying him for seventh in the league. Short also averaged 3.5 assists per game and shot 79.8% from the charity-stripe.
Jeremy Dixon was named to the Second-Team all ODAC squad for the second season in a row. Dixon averaged 12.2 ppg, and 7.8 rebounds per game. Dixon shot 54% from the free-throw line, a very impressive stat for an inside beast like Dixon. Dixon will graduate after this season, and he had a great tenure while he was here. His skill and tenacity will be missed.
Luckily, he will be succeeded by some great talent. Freshman Jordan Brown was named the ODAC Rookie of the Year, averaging 11.8 ppg and 1.2 blocks per game. He also was ninth in the ODAC in the steals category with 1.44 per game. Brown brought intensity to everygame, and can jump out of Crenshaw. He will be exciting to watch over the next few years, and he is a great addition to the already fantastic Yellow Jacket Basketball Squad.
Men’s Basketball had a great season, and I can speak for the entire school and every 6th man out there when I say that we can’t wait for next season.
