Language Placement Info
Hola, Bonjour, Salve, Guten Tag!:
Congratulations on having been accepted for admission at R-MC. We are looking forward to your arrival at the College and want to let you know how you can help us determine your appropriate placement in language courses.
IF YOU HAVE STUDIED A FOREIGN LANGUAGE IN HIGH SCHOOL, YOU NEED TO TAKE A PLACEMENT TEST IN THAT LANGUAGE.
· Please take the exam seriously and do the best work that you can do so that we can accurately assess your level. It is in your own best interest to be placed in the most appropriate language course for you.
- Even if you are considering studying a different language at R-MC, take the placement test in the language that you studied in high school.
- If you took more than one language in High School, you may take more than one placement exam.
- Do NOT take a placement test in any language you have NOT studied.
- If you have studied GERMAN, LATIN, ANCIENT GREEK, JAPANESE or CHINESE you will take your placement exam during the orientation period when you arrive on campus. German students placed above Beginning German will also have an oral interview. If you have questions, the contact person in German is Professor Mine Eren(meren@rmc.edu), the contact for Latin and Ancient Greek is Professor Greg Daugherty (gdaugher@rmc.edu) and for Asian Languages, Professor Thomas Porter (tporter@rmc.edu).
- If you have studied SPANISH or FRENCH, you will take a two-part placement exam, and you must complete both parts by July 4th.
Placement Exam Instructions for Spanish and French:
- You must complete the online placement exam before July 4th. You will be able to receive your housing assignment once you have finished the placement test.
- Important note: R-MC has an academic integrity policy. You may not get any help on any part of the placement exam, you may not use dictionaries or textbooks, and you must answer to the best of your ability at all times. Thank you for your compliance with our code of academic integrity.
Step 1: You must first take a standardized computerized multiple-choice exam online. It is a multiple-choice test and should take about 20 to 30 minutes. To access the exam, follow THESE instructions:
- Special Note: We have found that dial up connections do not work well, so you should take the exam on a computer that has high-speed web access, such as at a library, or at a high speed connection at home.
· You can link to the exam directly from the New Student Orientation webpage you may go to the Romance Languages Department website at http://www.rmc.edu/academics/romance-languages.aspx, and then click on the placement test link, or you can go directly to: (http://webcape.byuhtrsc.org/?acct=rmacon). Note: If you are using AOL, connect to AOL, minimize that screen, open Internet Explorer from your desktop, and follow the above instructions.
· When prompted, enter the password: yellowjacket1 (all lower case, 1 word).
· Then, click either Spanish or French.
· Enter all the indicated personal information. Use your given name; no nicknames please. For student ID, enter your birth date.
· When finished, click to finish the exam where indicated, and exit the program. If you do not follow this step, your score will not be forwarded to R-MC.
· If you encounter problems, or have difficulty entering the website, you may contact the faculty secretary, Susan Timberlake at stimberl@rmc.edu or by phone at 804-752-7208. In addition, you could contact Professor Mark Malin in the Spanish department at mmalin@rmc.edu.
· The college automatically receives a copy of your score.
Step 2: The second part of the exam is to complete a written section, which is also online. Like the computerized exam, it is exceptionally important that you complete the written portion to the very best of your ability so that we may most accurately place you in our classes.
· You can link to the exam directly from the New Student Orientation or you may go to the Romance Languages Department website at http://www.rmc.edu/directory/academics/roml/index.asp, and then click on the WRITTEN PLACEMENT TEST link, and choose the appropriate language.
· When prompted, enter the user name onlineplacement@rmc.edu, and the password once again is: yellowjacket1 (all lower case, one word).
· Specific instructions for each written exam (French and Spanish) are given on the exams themselves.
· The entire exam, including personal information is all on one page. You must first fill in all the informational blocks (name, email, address etc). You may then proceed to the essay portion of the exam and answer each of the given questions in either Spanish or French. Writing prompts are given in English to avoid any possible confusion.
· On each exam, there are accent keys that you should use to insert accent marks where they are needed. Please use these marks so that your spelling is correct and accurate.
· You are expected to write for a total of about 20 minutes. Please do your very best to adhere to this expectation. Once you have finished the exam, click SUBMIT at the bottom of the exam, and you are finished.
Important Note: Some of you will be asked to meet with language instructors to follow up on your placement test with an interview during Orientation. We will contact you about this opportunity.
We are glad you have chosen to attend Randolph-Macon College, and we look forward to seeing you in our language courses.
Sincerely:
The Language Faculty at R-MC
