IHSA Team

The Randolph-Macon College Equestrian Team welcomes riders of all levels.

FullSizeRender (2)Interested in joining the Equestrian Program at R-MC? There are many ways to add riding to your academic experience here:

Join the IHSA (Intercollegiate Horse Show Association) Team and compete both regionally and nationally for both team and individual points at all levels of experience. All show fees are paid by R-MC. We compete within Zone 4, Region 4 against teams including William & Mary, University of Richmond and others.

Improve your riding skills by simple enrolling in lessons; a PE credit can be earned and riders do not need to show in order to be a part of this class. Classes offered are suitable for beginner through advanced riders and horses are provided for lessons.

Riders may choose to bring their own horse and board at Coventry Farm.

We particularly encourage less experienced riders to consider becoming part of the team. IHSA shows are fun and exciting, with competition at a range of levels from beginner (walk/trot) through experienced (open). Because points are awarded equally for place finishes at all levels, this is truly a sport where every member can make a difference for the team.

Equestrian Team members do not need to have a horse in order to compete; in fact, IHSA rules require the host team to provide all the horses for the competition.

Where We Train

15003407_1331733736861038_1478175904893321766_oThe team trains at Coventry Farm, which is owned and operated by Cindy Carson Downing. A gorgeous facility located only three miles from campus, Coventry offers horses and riders outstanding training and care. Three arenas, including a large indoor arena, ensure that lessons always take place, regardless of weather.

IHSA Coaches

RMC is fortunate to have John West as our trainer for our IHSA program.

John is a highly accomplished trainer who has operated his own equestrian facilities since high school.  He brings over 26 years of experience to his position at Coventry and has coached many students to the elite levels in the hunter world.

Policies and Fees

Members of the R-MC Equestrian Team commit to a minimum of ten riding lessons per semester with our coaches and agree to participate in all horse shows and team activities to the best of their abilities.

Lesson fees are $500 per semester for ten lessons. (Additional lessons may be arranged directly with the coaches.) In addition, each team member pays IHSA dues (currently $40).

The college provides transportation to shows and pays the team’s travel costs and show entry fees and coaching fees.

IHSA Competitions

The IHSA seeks to make equestrian competition available to any college student, without regard to the student’s financial resources, riding level, or show experience. At IHSA events, all competitors ride horses provided by the host college, and riders choose their horses by drawing lots. The IHSA notes, “The theory behind this structure is to equalize variables of the competition and test the horsemanship of the contestants.”

At IHSA Division I shows, students are able to compete in hunt seat equitation both on the flat and over fences.
