THE RANDOLPH-MACON COLLEGE ATHLETIC

HALL OF FAME

 

The Randolph-Macon College Athletic Hall of Fame is hereby established to honor those who, by outstanding achievement in athletics or service to R-MC athletics, have made lasting contributions to the cause of sports at the College.  The Hall of Fame may also honor those former athletes who have made outstanding contributions to society in general.

 

Inductees of the R-MC Athletic Hall of Fame will be selected annually by the Hall of Fame Committee from nominations submitted by alumni and friends of the College.  Induction of members will be held annually, at a game designated by the Hall of Fame Committee.  A formal dinner to induct Hall of Fame nominees will be held on the Friday and or Saturday night of that game. 

 

The Hall of Fame Committee will consist of the Athletics Director, Assistant Athletics Director, Board of Trustee Member, 2 Members of the RMC Hall of Fame, 3 Alumni Members, and the RMC Faculty Athletic Representative.  The Athletics Director will select the RMC Hall of Fame Members and the Member of the Board of Trustee.  The Nominating Committee of the Society of Alumni will nominate three alumni.  The Board of Trustee Member and each alumni member shall serve for a 3-year term with a maximum of 2 consecutive terms.  The terms of the three alumni members and the Board of Trustees representative will be staggered in 1-year intervals.  An alumni member may be re-nominated to the Committee after sitting out on 3-year term. 

 

 

No more than six (6) living former athletes and two (2) deceased will be included in the Charter Membership.  In subsequent years, no more than four (4) living inductees and one (1) deceased may be inducted.  Selection of more than four (4) inductees will require unanimous approval of the Hall of Fame Committee.

 

Athletes may be named for their achievements in more than one sport, but may be inducted only once.  To be eligible for selection, the candidate’s most recent participation in a R-MC sport must have occurred ten or more years prior to induction.  Members of the Hall of Fame Committee shall be ineligible for selection while serving on that Committee.  Waiver of the stipulation would require unanimous approval of the Committee.  Any member of the Hall of Fame Committee who is a candidate for recognition by the Hall of Fame Committee shall abstain from the voting process.

 

In addition to the criteria listed above, the Committee shall be guided by the following eligibility requirements and criteria for selection:

 

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

 

The nominee shall:

 

1.                   Have been a full time student and or coach at Randolph-Macon College and

2.                    

3.                   Have been a letter winner or a coach in at least one varsity sport at the College and

 

4.                   At least ten years shall have elapsed since graduation (of R-MC attendance) before the individual is considered for the award.

CRITERIA FOR SELECTION

 

1.                   Achievement and/or leadership in sports competition as evidenced by

·         Post-season honors, such as All-American, All-State, etc.

·         Holding position of Team Captain

·         Record setting performance

 

2.                   Participation in several sports at the varsity level

 

3.                   Postgraduate achievement in sports evidenced by:

 

·         Outstanding amateur performance in a sport

·         Achievement in the coaching and/or training of athletes

·         Achievement in other sports-related areas such as sports journalism

 

4.                   General contribution to society as evidenced by service to and leadership in:

 

·         Community Affairs

·         Professional Affairs

·         Church Affairs

·         Randolph-Macon College Affairs

 

 

The Hall of Fame Committee, at its own discretion and upon unanimous vote, may authorize induction to a person who falls outside the defined criteria.  Such awards will be appropriately recognized along with the Hall of Fame display at the College.

 

The Hall of Fame Committee, at its own discretion, may authorize “Team Induction” to teams in recognition of outstanding service to sports at R-MC.  Such awards will be appropriately recognized along with the Hall of Fame display at the College.

 

After the induction of charter members, a committee of (4) will be appointed by the Athletics Director and charged with reviewing and screening the number of possible nominees to not more than (12) living members and (3) deceased members.  From this number, four (4) living and one (1) deceased may be selected for induction.  A quorum at the Hall of Fame Committee meeting shall be six (6).  Each of the Committee members present shall vote on the nominees.   Candidates of the Randolph-Macon College Athletic Hall of Fame will be elected by a (75%) approval vote of the represented Hall of Fame Committee members in attendance.  All discussions and results of voting at any meetings of the Hall of Fame Committee will be on a confidential basis.  The Chairman of the Committee will make all announcements concerning selections, or any other transactions at the meetings.

 

Each inductee will receive an appropriate award upon induction, and will have his or her name placed on a plaque and displayed at the College.  The Alumni Office will solicit nominations for Hall of Fame candidates in all sports.  The Hall of Fame Committee will consider such nominations at is annual meeting to be held on a date selected by the chairman.

 

This charter may be amended by the affirmative vote of seven (7) members of the Hall of Fame Committee.

 

All invitations to inductees, current members, and other guests will be issued from the Office of the President or his appointed representative.
