Hudgins Leads Virginia Wesleyan Past Randolph-Macon 10-5
ASHLAND, VA – Virginia Wesleyan’s Matt Hudgins had two hits, scored two runs and drove in five as the Marlins used a five-run eighth-inning to top visiting Randolph-Macon College 10-5 on Tuesday night in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
The Jackets struck first when Brian Rogers plated Chris Dykes to make the score 1-0 after Rogers connected on a two-out double in the first inning.
VWC responded with three runs of its own in the home-half of the first when Hudgins tripled to score two runs then came home on a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Ricky Allred to make the score 3-1.
With the score 5-2 in favor of the Marlins in the top-half of the fifth inning, Mike Wallace walked and Charlie Hartt singled with one out. After both moved up on a passed ball, Rogers cracked a double to score both to make the score 5-4.
R-MC then tied the at five in the seventh inning after Dykes led the frame off by being hit by a pitch, moved to second when Wallace drew a walk and third on a ground out. Joey Crawford then drove Dykes home on a sacrifice fly.
The Marlins then broke the game open with five runs in the eighth inning. Hudgins got the key hit, connecting for a bases loaded triple with two outs to make the score 10-5.
Hartt suffered the loss after going 7.1 innings, allowing seven runs and striking out five. His record drops to 2-3 on the season. VWC starter David Imperato got the win on a staff day for the Marlins.
Randolph-Macon returns to action on Thursday when it travels to St. Mary’s (Md.) for a 3:30 p.m. game.
