Randolph-Macon Baseball Knocks Off Virginia Wesleyan 9-2
ASHLAND, VA – The Randolph-Macon College baseball team banged out 12 hits and got eight strong innings from starting pitcher Charlie Hartt as the Yellow Jackets knocked off first-place Virginia Wesleyan College 9-2 in an ODAC game played in Ashland on Wednesday.
R-MC (14-12-1 / 5-6 ODAC) got eight innings from Hartt who allowed just two runs, walked just two and struck out five to even his record at 2-2 on the season. The Yellow Jackets were led offensively by Mike Wallace who was 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored in the win. Brain Rogers, Jason Haislip, and Bruno Gora all had two hits on the day.
R-MC jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning after David Jayne was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame, stole second, moved to third on a ground out and scored on a sacrifice fly by Wallace.
The Yellow Jackets extended its lead to 5-0 when they struck for four runs in the bottom-half of the second inning. All four of the runs came with two outs and R-MC was aided by two errors committed by the Marlins. Wallace got the big hit of the inning, singling home Jayne and JC Conway.
After VWC struck for a pair of runs in the top of the third inning, R-MC scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and a pair in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the game away.
Jesse Freeman (3-3) took the loss for VWC (16-11 / 8-3 ODAC) after going three innings, allowing seven runs and striking out five. Matt Hudgins led the Marlins on offense with two hits and an RBI.
Randolph-Macon will return to action on Saturday when it welcomes Bridgewater College to Ashland for a 12:00 p.m. ODAC doubleheader. The Marlins will be back in action on Thursday when they take on Piedmont College on home at 3:00 p.m.
