R-MC and Mary Washington Tie 3-3
ASHLAND, VA – The Randolph-Macon College and the University of Mary Washington baseball teams tied 3-3 after the game was called due to darkness after 10 innings of play at Hugh Stephens field in Ashland on Wednesday afternoon.
R-MC jumped on the board quick, plating a run in the home-half of the first inning. Mike Wallace led the inning off with a walk and moved to second when UMW starter Nate Hartman balked. After Chris Dykes moved Wallace to third base with a ground out to the right side, Greg Meleski brought Wallace home with a sacrifice fly.
Mary Washington responded in the next half inning by loading the bases and tying the game when R-MC starter Bo Garner hit Nick Espinosa with a pitch, brining Chase Townsend home. With two outs, Riley Gorman singled scoring Tom McDermott and Ray Moore to give the Eagles a 3-1 advantage.
The Yellow Jackets cut the lead to 3-2 in the next half inning when David Jayne was hit by a pitch with one out and then advanced to second base when Hartman uncorked a wild pitch. Joey Crawford then delivered a single to right field to bring Jayne home.
R-MC knotted the game at 3-3 when Brian Rogers singled home Dykes with two outs in the third inning to pull the Jackets even.
The game would turn out to remain tied for the next six innings of play. Both teams had their chances to break the tie but the Yellow Jackets left eight men on base while the Eagles left 10.
Garner went five innings, surrendering nine hits and three runs while striking out three. Matt Tiller tossed two innings, allowing two hits while Charlie Hartt threw the final three innings, giving up just one hit and striking out one.
Hartman logged four innings, allowing six hits and three runs and striking out six. Hartman was relieved by Townsend who tossed six innings and gave up just three hits.
Dykes went 3-for-5 and Meleski registered a pair of hits on the day for R-MC. Townsend led the UMW attack going 4-for-5 with a run scored.
Randolph-Macon will return to action on Saturday when it will welcome Dickinson for a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 in Ashland. Mary Washington will take on Gettysburg at home on Saturday in a doubleheader starting at 12:00 p.m.
